Case Study 3

The Client had several existing oil wells on a satellite platform that were marginally producing at or near the departing pipeline pressure.  This pipeline, which connected the satellite platform to a central processing facility platform, had a natural pressure drop of approximately 50 PSI.  Therefore, some means of reducing the pipeline pressure or increasing the pressure from the marginal wells was needed to maintain and / or increase production.

Fairwinds was asked by the Client to design a solution that would not only restore previous production rates to the wells, but to improve the rates, if possible.  Many options were considered including adding compression and pumps to produce the wells at a lower pressure and increase the discharge pressure to the departing pipeline.  Various types of multiphase pumps were also reviewed as viable options.  One large design constraint was that the prime mover on the chosen solution had to be natural gas powered since the satellite platform lacked sufficient electrical power generation facilities.  Additionally, all of the options studied would require expansion of the deck on the satellite platform to accommodate the necessary additional equipment.  After lengthy discussions with the Client and several vendors, a multiphase pump solution was chosen.  The multiphase pump selected was manufactured in Germany, assembled in Canada and tested in Louisiana prior to going offshore.  Fairwinds’ inspection team in Canada and Engineering support team with the vendor in Louisiana were critical to insuring the success of the project.  All of Fairwinds’ Engineering disciplines were used to design the ICP and deck structural modifications, test separator addition and fully automated systems necessary to make this project a success.

Results
:  From conceptual engineering to commissioning, the installation of a single deck extension, multiphase pump skid and interconnecting piping were completed on time and under budget.  Fairwinds‘ multiphase pump solution enabled the operator to draw down the wells and extract an additional 600 barrels of oil per day, which far exceeded the operator’s expectations.
